In well insulated buildings they are very economical to run. They are a much more efficient alternative to gas, oil, and solid fuel home heating systems.

Homes with heat pumps installed are up to 30% cheaper to run than gas boilers and oil boilers. Heat generated by heat pumps is released via underfloor heating, radiators or warm air and can supply all of the hot water required for showers, baths and sinks.
A relatively new technology to Irish homeowners, heat pumps have significantly lower emissions and require little maintenance and have a longer lifespan than conventional fossil fuel boilers. Heat pumps are more expensive to purchase and install than conventional fossil fuel boilers.
As they are a low carbon alternative, homeowners can avail of SEAI grants to offset the additional cost. Currently the SEAI offer a grant of €3,500 towards the cost of installing a heat pump system in homes built before 2011.
To get the best performance from heat pumps, it’s recommended that your home is well-insulated and relatively airtight. SEAI also offer insulation grants for your home.
